The Dragons spend their days in their “playground” – a repurposed decorative bird cage – which sits on the circulation desk.
This first photo is taken from above, looking into the playground, which has “water” and a swim-donut for the Dragons to play in and on.
This is how our Library patrons see the Dragons:
Some of you have already noticed that when the Dragons are seemingly out in the bright sun Dragon Blayze almost always wears a sun-blocking hat, and lots of sunscreen (and makes sure the other Dragons wear lots and lots of sunscreen, too).
And, at least once a week, a patron will ask about this sign:
Well, when the Dragons made their “playground” debut on the circ desk four years ago, I noticed that I would find candy in their playground – tootsie rolls, mints, skittles, gum – and I was somewhat bemused. I never caught anyone actually putting the candy in the playground, but there it would show up. One week, during the winter when the temps were below zero (which meant no children after school – too cold to walk to the library), I noticed the candy was STILL being left in the Dragons’ playground!
That’s right – ADULTS were feeding the Dragons!
I was tired of adding “clean out the Dragons’ playground” to my end-of-shift duties, so I added the “Please don’t feed the dragons!” sign.
It worked!
(Disturbing, right? Such are the things that happen in a Library that has Dragons!)
